The Financial Coaching Process

What is is
In the simplest terms, I am providing you advice on your total net worth, how to preserve it, grow it, and the options available for you to meet your overall life plans.

My role is to present to you the best options per your situation and goals, then coach you through them. Your role is to ask the questions necessary to understand the situation, and then take action based on the plan provided.

What it is Not
You are paying me simply for my advice, and I will do my best to find the options that are in your best interest and guide you through the process of choosing one of those options.

I am not an investment manager, a broker/dealer, fund manager, or registered investment advisor. I will not be handling your money for you. For more on this, be sure to read the disclaimers page.

What We Will Cover

In my financial coaching process I like to cover 6 main areas that I feel are most beneficial to couples new to their finances:

Your money from 30,000 feet
Here our goal will be to gain a clear understanding of what is essential to you about your money, budget, savings, and overall life plan. We’ll cover money psychology, how to think about your finances, and how this will affect all other areas of your life.

This sets the stage for all of the subsequent areas will cover.

Your Money in Action
Here we will cover your balance sheet, cashflow, how renting or purchasing a home fits into your financial plan, and Debt Management.

Investing and Saving
We will cover more about how you save, how that flows into your retirement accounts, as well as other alternative investments, and Employee Benefits.

Giving and Taxes
Your charity as well as your taxes are part of a holistic financial plan. In this section we cover things like Tax Planning, Tax Loss Harvesting, Charitable Contributions, and how you can maximize what you give to be able to maximize your net worth.

Insurance
here we will look at all of the policies that are available to you through your employer as well as other sources (Life, Disability, P&C, Health) and come up with guidelines for maximizing the benefit you get from them.

Estate Planning
We will survey all of your current documents, Titling and beneficiaries, discuss End of Life Planning, and set you up with a full estate plan that ties in all of the other areas above.

Along the way we can discuss other issues that may come up or that are of particular concern to you. for example some couples with older children want to carve out specific savings for their children's marriages. Others want to make sure that their children with special needs are cared for. Any specific concerns that you have can be brought up after our initial session and we can fit them into your overall plan.


WHAT TO EXPECT

Initial Meeting: A 60-minute meeting where we get clear on your financial goals and values, what your current financial picture looks like, and what current limitations or hurdles you are facing.
After our initial meeting, we will then meet in-person or virtually in the following ways:

Clarification Meeting(s): Per need & based on the information gathered in the initial meeting, we may meet again to clarify some of the information that you provided as well as gain new insight into some of the financial goals that you have.

Plan Delivery Meeting: A 90-Minute meeting to deliver your financial planning recommendations, actions items, and prioritized “to-do” list. You’ll receive a copy of your financial plan a few days before this meeting for review.

30 Day Check-In: A 60-Minute call within one month of recommendation delivery to review progress.

6 Month Reviews: A 60-Minute review meeting every 6 months to measure progress, make adjustments, identify new action steps and address life changes.

Ongoing Access: E-mails and calls for accountability and to address changes along the way.

Comprehensive Financial Plan: 10-15 page financial plan complete with an itemized action checklist, an overview of your goals, a net worth statement, a cash flow projection, retirement projections, and recommendations.

Fee-Only, Straight-Forward Advice

FEE ONLY ADVICE
These services are fee-based, and I am a fee based planner. What does that means? It means that I will not be attempting to sell you any products. I won't be managing investments for you or selling you on an insurance policy.

This is called an Asset Under Advisement (AUA) model, meaning if you have 300k in total assets, you would pay 1.5% of that amount as a fee, or $4500.
This allows my services to scale with the complexity of your situation but is capped by what is financially feasible for you.

FEE STRUCTURE
You pay 1.5% of your assets under advisement or $3,000, whichever is higher.

$1500 is due at sign up in order to begin the planning process. The remainder is determined after your initial planning session. You then have a choice to pay that remainder lump sum or over the course of 10 months.

So in a situation where you are paying $3,000, we would begin planning process with an earned retainer of $1500, and then monthly payments of $150 over the course of 10 months.

WHAT TO EXPECT
For Personal Consults: I'm sure you have a lot of questions. You may be looking to understand fatwas and religious rulings on different issues. You may need advice about which of your choices on financial issues is the best for you to make a decision on.
I am here to assist you, walking you through related ethical issues and navigating the issues that affect you and your values.

For Business consults: What's more important in business, advertising it as "Islamic" or ensuring that your values align with your business decisions? I will assist you in navigating the issues your business faces, review the documents related to that process, and issue an opinion on that matter if needed. To start the process, let's schedule a call and develop a scope of work relevant to your needs.

Personal Zakat Calculation: Anyone can say their organization is eligible to receive Zakat, but have they actually been vetted? As Muslim donors become more discerning, make sure your organization's reputation is protected. I will review your current operations then, based on need, assist you in creating policies and procedures and issue certification for your Zakat eligibility. Followup services include yearly audit and on-going consulting.

Organizational Zakat Certification: Anyone can say their organization is eligible to receive Zakat, but have they actually been vetted? As Muslim donors become more discerning, make sure your organization's reputation is protected. I will review your current operations then, based on need, assist you in creating policies and procedures and issue certification for your Zakat eligibility. Estate Planning: Estate planning is the act of planning your estate, i.e. what happens to your property after you die and who cares for your loved ones. With an estate plan, you get to say who gets what, when they get it, and who should look after the ones you care for when you are gone.

FEE BASED, ADVICE ONLY SERVICE
These services are fee-based, and I am a fee based consultant. What does that means? It means that I will not be attempting to sell you any products. I won't be managing investments for you or selling you on any external services.

FEE STRUCTURE
The fees are calculated hourly or on a retainer basis, depending on the project.
